Shixijiang Fm
Type Locality and Naming
It was named by the Qiyang-Lingling Geological Party of Hunan Province in 1959. The naming section is located in the vicinity of the Shixi River, Fengjiachong Village, Lingling County, Hunan Province, with its reference section being situated in the Fengjiachong-Yanglukou area.
Synonym: (石溪江组), In the area of Liuyang County of north eastern Hunan it is also known as the Yaolong Fm
Lithology and Thickness
It is composed mainly of alternating layers of arkosic quartz-sandstone and siltstone in association with mudstone, with a thickness of about 295 m.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
Its basal part being in a conformable contact with the underlying Fengjiachong Mbr of the Guanyintan Fm
Upper contact
Regionally, the schematic strat column indicates the next younger unit is the Yanglukou Fm
Regional extent
It is distributed extensively in the Fengjiachong and Huangyangshi areas of Lingling County, southwestern Hunan. In the area of Liuyang County of north eastern Hunan it is also known as the Yaolong Formation the lower part of which is composed largely of yellow-green siltstone and mudstone, intercalated with arkosic quartz-sandstone, with its upper part being composed of an alternating layer of purple and yellow-green silty mudstones, intercalated with arkosic quartz-sandstones and marl lenses, with a total thickness of about 564 m, yielding bivalve, Ostracoda and plant fossils.

Fossils
Its lower part yields plant fossils as represented by Equisetum sp., Neocalamites sp.; and with its middle part yielding bivalve fossils as represented by Pseudocardinia spp.

The formation belongs to fluvial-lacustrine deposits.
